Industry Outlook
The number of positions in finance is expected to grow with the eventual economic recovery, even in the banking sector. Though financials were some of the hardest hit in the credit crisis, they are starting to recover and hire again.
Traditional pension plans are being replaced by self-directed retirement accounts such that many Americans are trading stock and requiring investment advisory services. As the economy recovers, many workers planning to retire over the next 10 years will have money with which to retire and will require brokers' services.
Relative to prior years, however, current opportunities are slim given recent banks' cost-cutting, re-structuring, mergers, and bankruptcies. Leaving the credit crisis, a growth in accounting and auditing is expected over the next decade. This will result from stricter regulations and-- eventually-- a recovering economy. Those with college degrees and CPA's will have an advantage in the job search regardless of economic conditions.
Additionally, the number of businesses will increase with a future economic recovery, spurring a greater need for accountants and auditors. As the American population ages, sales of health insurance is normally expected to rise sharply. With new healthcare reform policy from the Whitehouse, however, it is uncertain whether private insurance brokers will be driven out of business and made uncompetitive. Demand for sales agents depends on the demand for such insurance products. In the longer term, population growth will allow for more sales of home insurance, automobile insurance, and health/life insurance. Sales of insurance to corporations should also increase with an economic recovery.
Recently, sales agent positions have been scarce due to insurance companies' efforts to control costs in the recent economic downturn. Additionally, the advent of new marketing methods (namely, use of the Internet and direct marketing schemes) has allowed many insurance companies to bypass the need for brokers, eliminating insurance jobs. At the same time, however, faster connection with customers on the front end via the Internet may allow for more clients to process and the need for more people to handle those requests on the back end.
